Caroline Currall was born at Marylebone in 1854 (birth registered second quarter).
At the time of the 1871 census Caroline (19) was a general servant of a barrister and his family at College Terrace, Hampstead. She probably came to work for a family in Oxford later in the 1870s.
In 1880 Caroline was admitted as a patient to the Radcliffe Infirmary, and was described in the records simply as a servant, with no address given. She had been suffering from double pneumonia and exhaustion for nearly three weeks when she died in that hospital:
† Miss Caroline Currall died at the Radcliffe Infirmary at the age of 26 (correct on her tombstone, but wrongly given as 27 by the burial register and the General Record Office) on 7 April 1880 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 10 April (burial recorded in the parish register of St Giles’s Church).
The family for whom she worked may have paid for her gravestone, as it gives only the barest factual information and does not mention her family.
